Know Phytotherapy?

If my first book, The Secret of Herb: The Story of Green Medicine, served as an introduction to the once unfamiliar concept of green medicine, then the latest edition turns our attention toward a theme that remains even more novel in many places: phytotherapy.

In Korea and much of Asia, the word “phytotherapy” is still unfamiliar. It stems from the ancient Greek word phyton, meaning “that which brings life into being and sustains its growth.” Simply put, it refers to plants as living agents of healing.

Phytotherapy is the art and science of using plants to support and enhance the health of both humans and animals—a tradition rooted in millennia of experience, observation, and refinement. It is not folklore but a knowledge system—one that modern science increasingly validates and business is beginning to embrace.

Eco-Healthy Living and Phytotherapy

In my earlier writings, I framed green medicine as a practical and scientific approach to health-centered industries, where herbal and natural ingredients could be thoughtfully applied to product development and personal wellness. This new work builds upon that foundation by positioning phytotherapy as a bridge between holistic health and sustainable business.

Green medicine seeks complete health (holistic wellness) by nurturing the body’s innate immunity and healing capabilities through nature’s gifts—particularly medicinal herbs. It is both a philosophy and a medical system, emphasizing preventive care and eco-integrated living. Today, as global interest in natural efficacy resurges, phytochemicals and plant-based actives are once again in the spotlight.

Phytotherapy, as introduced in my 2nd book, represents a practical application of green medicine, guiding readers through actionable strategies for living well in harmony with nature. From herbal remedies to high-value wellness products, this field opens doors to innovation—especially within the healthcare and wellness industries.
